Great Contest and Crowd at Cygnet Oval- Round 5 review and Round 6 preview
The weather may have not started off the day that well for the ‘’Cygnet Community Bank Football Club’’ but those footy faithfuls who filled Cygnet Oval to the brim last Saturday to watch two traditional rivals do battle certainly got their money’s worth with what can only be described as a thrilling Senior’s match to end a great day of local football.
Nothing compares to when we do battle with the Huonville Lions or Kingborough Tigers for that matter. Better gates, more supporters, a great vibe and some great chit-chat and a bit of good old ‘’stirring’’ in the stubby bar as the supporters of both sides enjoy what is always a tough contest.
The Colts kicked the day off in cold showery weather. The ground was in fantastic condition given the amount of over-night rain that fell, and for this we thank the hard work of Huon Valley Council and Rebecca Bell, with the new drainage system appearing to work perfectly on this occasion. The Colt’s had a couple of spare players on the bench and took to the field with good intentions, but a strong Huonville outfit wasted no time in stamping their authority on the match. 8 goals in the first term followed by another 9 in the second meant all the Port could do was to try to keep the losing margin below 200 points for the rest of the match. The Lions looked on target but a much better last quarter ensured the Port prevented the Lions from winning by that margin – however the end result was a 180 loss for the Port. The Club is still very proud of the boys regardless, and we are proud to field a side. There is a number of the boy’s showing distinct improvement, and we encourage them to stick together through the season as some promising senior players are there in the making. Better players included Josh Doyle, Matty Coulson and Aaron Dance who all played well. Joe Direen, Jakeb Dean and Marcus Coulson rounded out a day when the boy’s never gave up, but were simply out-classed.
The Reserves were fielding probably their best side of the season and dedicated their match to former player and team-mate Mark ‘’Wacky’’ Adams. With up to 20 players on the track on the Thursday night, players will need to now train to hold their spots which is good for the Club. The first term was a dour struggle with the Port holding a 6 point lead. 3 goals to 1 in the second term enabled the Port to hold a good half time lead. They continued to hold the Lions at bay all day and a great final term with 6 unanswered goals provided Choppa and the boy’s their first win of the season by 62 points. The song was sung with plenty of ‘’gusto’’ in a great win.
Better players included Gerard Warren who had a mountain of the footy on the ball and he received great support from current Hobart TSL player and former Cygnet Mini –League and Colt’s player Cam Potter. Shane Clark with 5 goals was deadly up forward while Benny Dean’s attack on the footy kept the Lions forwards looking nervous. Young Ryan Nichols was superb in the back-line and Libba Paul had numerous possessions.
A great team effort boy’s – well done!
The Seniors had a point to prove after their poor loss to Kingborough the previous Saturday, but knew the Lions would come ready to play. The Lions jumped out of the blocks with James Lange and Darren Garth proving head-aches for the Port coaching staff. A far better effort in the second term tightened the game right up at the long break; however not taking anything away from the Lions but the Port were wasteful near goal with 11 scoring shots to 3 for only a 3 goal return could have had the Port well in control at the main break. One felt the game was going to have plenty of ‘’twists’’ and ‘’turns’’ after half time, and the crowd were not disappointed, with both side going goal for goal.
Again, the Ports conversion ability was very poor compared to the Lions, so a thrilling last quarter was guaranteed with a few points separating both teams. A tough physical last quarter ensued and with 5 minutes to play the Port led by 10 points with victory looking almost certain. However the Lions would not lie down and 2 goals in 2 minutes saw them grab back the lead and possibly pulling victory from thin air. However, step up Port Captain Andrew Palmer who found the ball a long way from goal and rammed home a ‘’long’’ bomb to take the lead by 4 points. With confusion surrounding the score-board’s accuracy, nobody knew the exact lead the Port had. In the dying seconds James Lange was paid a free kick on the grand-stand wing as the siren sounded; too far from goal to score. Due to a silly act, a 50 metre penalty was then paid and Lange was about 40 metres from goal with a chance to snatch a win or draw for the Lions, but his shot went astray with the Port scraping home by a small margin (confirmed to be 6 points after the siren) in a great game from both sides.
While happy, the Port were fairly subdued after the game as Coach Matt Tyrrell reminded players that a similar undisciplined act could cost a side a final one day!
Better players included Captain Andrew Palmer who led from the front all day and kicked the Port’s winning goal. He was well supported by Mark Alberry who is having a very consistent season, while Dillon Davie finished with 3 goals, but could have easily kicked 8 if accurate. Trent Rollins played his best game since joining the Port while Adam Duggan fought back well in a great contest at full-back. Ben Halton with 5 goals was his usual creative self at full-forward and for a brief stint on the ball.
We take this opportunity to thanks all Lions players and supporters who patronised us so well last Saturday, especially in the stubby bar. We also appreciate Coach Sam Chivers and the player’s supporters and officials who stayed on after the Senior match for our player awards. We look forward to returning the favour in round two. As Matt Tyrrell pointed out – the Lions have a great young team and are heading places under Sam’s coaching and guidance.
Thanks to everybody who supported our Mexican night last Saturday at the Clubrooms. A great night was had by all who attended. Well done to the fund-raising team on a great effort!
This week the Port hosts Claremont in its second home game in a row, and will face its biggest test so far in terms of measuring the side’s improvement. The Port want Cygnet Oval to be their ‘’fortress’’ this season, but they will need to play at their absolute best to get over the Kim Excel coached Magpies who are the side ‘’on the rise’’ in the competition. Three great games await footy fans, so let’s see Cygnet Oval jam-packed again Saturday with Bay 13 in full-swing to cheer the Port boy’s hopefully to victory.
Supporters are reminded that due to some great work off the ground by Claremont’s administration, they now field a Colts side that will play our young Port side at 10.00am Saturday morning. Get along and support our ‘’future’’. Supporters of both sides are welcome in the Clubrooms after the senior match for player awards.
Volunteers of the Week
This week we acknowledge “Nobby’’ Burnett who is runner for the Reserves and then runs water for the Seniors every Saturday. “Nobby’’ is a former player, and it is great to see him still volunteering and giving back to the Club. He is also a great club-person, co-ordinating the grocery wheelbarrow pushed around the town every Friday night that raises considerable and valuable funds for the Club. Thanks “Nobby’’ – be assured your considerable efforts and contribution do not go unnoticed and are appreciated by everybody at the Club. We also thank Timmy Coad who ran water for the Reserves last week – thanks Tim!

Port Blown Away at Twin Ovals – Round 4 review and Round 5 preview
The ‘Cygnet Community Bank Football Club’ had a day to forget at the Twin Ovals last Saturday. The much anticipated match of the round turned into a fizzer as a slick Kingborough Tigers outfit totally outclassed the Port in all facets of the game. The Colts games do not get any easier each week and our young side faced up to a skilful young Tigers unit in fantastic conditions with not too much wind blowing as forecast. Six goals to one had the Tigers well in control of the game by the first break. Then it turned ugly with the Tigers ramming home 9 unanswered goals to lead by 93 points at half time. The Cygnet boys just had no answer to the skill and run of the Tigers as they dominated the second half to win by a massive 187 points. Coach Tyler Cowen gave the boys a dressing down after the game and told them that if they are not prepared to train as a group and improve their fitness and skills, further losses of this nature will follow. Better players included Brady Gordon and Sean Burgess who both battled hard, while Jakeb Dean, Reece Polley , Aaron Dance and Quentin Ward tried hard. The Reserves had a couple of new players in Kyle Brown who has not played for a fair few years and Timmy Coad, a former Cygnet lad and soccer convert. This match proved the most entertaining of the day with both sides trying hard in the first term as the windy conditions started to set in. The second term was another dour struggle with the Tigers leading by 19 points at the long break. The Port had the aid of the breeze in the third term, but wasted opportunities to trail by 15 points leading into the final term. The Kingborough side proved a little too strong, and with the breeze in the final term ran out 29 point victors. Better players for the Port included Jules Direen who put his body on the line all day while Gerard Warren pushed hard for another senior recall with a strong game. Shane Clark, Tommy Slevin, Loic Auderset and Timmy Bone all tried hard for the Port. A good effort by the Reserves and the final margin of 29 points with a couple of late goals probably flattered Kingborough’s winning margin to a degree. The senior match had plenty of hype and a good crowd was in for what most predicted to be a good contest. The Kingborough side had other ideas, and with a dominant first term piled on 9 goals to the Ports 1, albeit with the aid of a breeze. The Port looked a bit shell-shocked and never really recovered as the Tigers dominated the ruck, midfield, clearances, and their foot and hand skills were a class above the Ports. At half time the Port trailed by over 10 goals. After the break the Tigers were merciless, with another 8 goals to 2 in the third term and 6 to 4 in the final term where at least the Port almost equalled them on the score-board. However, the end result was a 111 point thumping at the hands of a very well drilled and fit side that must be one of the flag favourites this season on exposed form. No excuses from the Port, as we were totally outplayed by an extremely good Kingborough side. Better players were hard to find but Bradley Watson contested hard around the packs and Mitch Direen battled hard in the back-line. Dillon Davie with four goals tried to spark the Port while Jacob Brereton tried hard in the ruck and Benny Halton with 3 goals played well, often against 3 opponents. Mentally, the Port will need to cast that fairly unpalatable effort aside and re-group for what should be a far more even affair at Cygnet Oval this Saturday when we host long-time rivals the Huonville Lions. This game always attracts a big crowd from the Huon Valley, and Saturday will be no exception, with the Port looking to bounce back to win their 3rd game of the season, while the Lions will know this game is crucial to their season with just the 4 points on the ladder at present. Both sides lift for these matches, so make sure you do not miss what will be an enthralling contest, and get to Cygnet Oval on Saturday to support all three teams in their quest for victory.

This week’s volunteer of the week is Senior Match Manager Damien Steele. Steelo is a quiet type volunteer who goes about his business in a truly professional manner. Port’s Improvement Continues - Round 3 review and Round 4 preview
The ‘Cygnet Community Bank Football Club’ hosted the Dodges Ferry Football Club in the SFL’s revised Colts roster last Saturday. After initially being told we would have no central umpires, it was good to see the boy’s in yellow appear before the match, even though both club’s had standby volunteers in place just in case. We must send a huge thank you to the umpires, many of them younger boys and men often doing a match in town and then travelling down to double up; or vice-versa. In contrast to their clash with the young Sharks the week before, the Colts showed plenty of ability and actually matched and at times out-played their opposition in the first quarter with the back-line holding firm and the forwards playing in front and taking some good marks. Some good passages of play resulted in the second half from both sides but a bad lapse by the Cygnet side in the third quarter let the Sharks kick away and take control of the match; eventually winning by 98 points. Still that’s a 7 goal improvement on last week’s result; so well done Tyler and the boys. Better players for the Port included Jake Dean who is a senior player in the making, while Tom Palmer was excellent and Jordan Ross is another skilful future senior player. Brady Gordon continues to impress with his courage and determination in the back-line, often against bigger opponents while Aaron Dance (2 goals) and Matty Coulson both played well. Everybody admires the boy’s efforts often against the odds, and we know that if they keep persisting; hopefully a win will come before season’s end – keep it up boy’s! The Reserves match did not start well for the Port with the Two Blues kicking 6 first quarter goals to 1. The second term was a pretty scrappy affair but the Port held the Lindisfarne side quite well; but still faced a decent 4 goal deficit at the long break. The Port could make no head-way in the 3rd term with the Two Blues holding sway by 4 goals going into the final term. The Port finally clicked as Lindisfarne tired and stormed home with Gerry Warren getting the ball rolling in the middle kicking 5 goals to 3 to just fall short by only two goals. Better players for the Port included Shane Clark who finished with match- high 5 goals while Corey Shaw and Josh Mazur played really consistently all day. Paddy Wilcox and Jules Direen were hard at it while Tommy Slevin was good in his first game of the season. Brad Carver (2 goals) along with Jarrah Allan also made welcome returns. This side can play some really good football in patches, but a lack of dedication and fitness is proving the difference in most games so far; so keep working hard lads! The Senior side methodically disassembled the Two Blues game plan to perfection. As a matter of fact, they never worried about it. Right from the out-set the Port made a statement with Captain Andrew Palmer leading from the front with a quick goal with another that soon followed. The Port sped to a quarter time lead of 26 points. The Port had far more of the football in the second term, but missed some easy shots on goal whilst the Two Blues kicked 2 goals themselves to stay in touch at the long break. After half time, the Port dominated the match, with the only downside being a serious knee injury to Grant ‘’Noodles’’ Clark. The Port showed no mercy in the final term, and buried their opposition by kicking 6 goals; only allowing the Lindisfarne side to kick one goal in the second half. After being on the end of some big losses over recent years from the Lindisfarne Club, the Port were happy with the victory. Better players included Sammy Dean who was clearly best on ground in another stand-out performance while new Vice-Captain Adam Duggan was superb repelling any forward moves by the Two Blues. Cam Wilcox continues to play well in the back-line while Mark Alberry is having his best season since joining the Port. Rhys Jennings is reaping the benefits of a big pre-season while Andrew Palmer is leading well from the front as new Captain. Benny Halton (6 goals) was again out-standing while Dillon Davie, Rhys Jennings and Sammy Dean with 2 each lent good support. With big ‘’Pud”” uncharistically kicking 1 goal 7, the winning margin should have been well over 100 points, with the Ports big power forwards making most back-men very nervous. However, the Ports biggest test by far presents this Saturday when they take on great rivals and ladder-leaders Kingborough in a match that always draws a big crowd who love to see these two former HFA sides doing battle. The Tigers, like the Two Blues, have well and truly had the wood on the Port over the last few seasons, and play the Twin Ovals very well. However, the Port gained a lot of ‘’mental’’ confidence from last week’s victory, and will be looking to make sure Kingborough earn every kick in contested footy in what should be three good games of football for the supporters of both sides. While not under-estimating the enormity of the task, we look forward to the challenge presented that makes footy such a great and unpredictable game. See you all there!
Bad Luck
We pass our best wishes to Will Ford who sustained a serious knee injury playing mixed net-ball and may miss the whole 2013 season after putting in a massive pre-season. We also feel for Grant ‘’Noodles’’ Clark, and hope he can return in 2013, as he was having a great season so far. While their losses are huge for the Port, it creates opportunity as we now see who wants to step up to assist the Ports steady improvement. We hope the boy’s fill some roles that keeps them active within the Club.
Congratulations
We congratulate all our new leaders at the Club. Andrew ‘’Cheesy’’ Palmer is the new senior captain taking the baton from a great former leader in Bradley Watson. “Cheesy’’ was a popular pick for what he has brought to the Club including but not limited to respect, passion, dedication, a preparedness to assist and full peer support. We also congratulate Timmy Bone & Josh Doyle as Captains in the the Reserves and Colts respectively, along with all elected Vice & Deputy Vice captains – well done everybody.
Volunteer of the Week
This week’s volunteer of the week is Senior Team Runner Stuey Eaton. Stuey is the consummate Club volunteer. Recently, with the grateful assistance of the Dodges Ferry Football Club who we thank sincerely, he umpired Colts due to a lack of umpires then was runner for the senior team. Stuey is the Club’s SFL representative and there are not many too positions he has not volunteered for or filled at some stage. Stu, your selflessness and significant contribution is greatly appreciated by all at the Club.
Anzac Day
The Club pays respect to all returned service men and women, and in particular those who lost their lives in the line of duty. The Club will be laying its traditional wreath and the Cygnet ceremony this Thursday, and players are encouraged to attend in full Club apparel.
